Heart emergency guide

What to do in the first minutes of a suspected heart attack or collapse.

Suspected heart attack

  • Chest pain, pressure or tightness lasting more than a few minutes, or coming back
  • Pain spreading to the arm, left shoulder, jaw, neck or back
  • Breathlessness, with or without chest pain
  • Cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness
  • Women, elders and people with diabetes may only feel tiredness, breathlessness or upper-stomach discomfort
  1. Call 108 (ambulance) or 112 right away.
  2. Stop all activity, sit down and stay calm. Loosen tight clothing.
  3. Do not drive yourself. Go by ambulance to a hospital that can do angioplasty.
  4. Chew an aspirin only if a doctor or the call-taker advises it and you are not allergic.
  5. Keep your old reports and medicine list ready for the hospital team.

Someone collapsed and is not breathing normally

  1. Shout for help and call 108 / 112. Put the phone on speaker.
  2. Start hands-only CPR: push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, about 100–120 times a minute.
  3. Use an AED if one is available and follow its voice instructions.
  4. Keep going until help arrives or the person starts breathing normally.
